The design choice was deliberate: Zephyr Cove Resort sought a silhouette that conjured Mark Twain nostalgia, even though Tahoe's glacial origins and 1,897-metre elevation make her an inland sea of a different order.
The lake itself was carved by faulting and volcanic damming two million years ago, then sculpted by glaciers during the Pleistocene. Its clarity — Secchi disk readings routinely exceed 21 metres — stems from the absence of nutrient inflow; 63 tributaries feed the basin, but only the Truckee River drains it, creating a near-closed hydrologic system.
